Wider Picture – Education in Serbia

The main problem of the Serbian school system at all levels of education is a hyper production of the post-school unemployed population whose education is ineffective in the real world. In the new serial of the Wider Picture we present persons, initiatives and schools including also non-formal ones with one common aim: education that would prepare students for real life and challenges of their future professions.

The common link connecting the majority of about two hundred secondary and high schools in Serbia is the fact that their diplomas don’t grant any special chances on the job market. However, while accomplishing this serial we had visited some schools on the opposite end of this road i.e. the ones that prepare their students for the perspective and today already demanded professions. Actually, these are mostly technical schools which provide their students with knowledge that enable them to understand and use high technologies and IT languages, but there are also some other that open to their pupils a road to the career of first-class cooks, designers or entrepreneurs in the world of agro-business.

In the sequence dedicated to education we also show how the success of IT industry in Serbia reflects on the country’s school system and why it is necessary to educate a high number of the future software engineers and other “ITs.” Would the introduction of informatics as an obligatory course from the 5th class of Elementary school be of help on this road? We opened this issue with the founders of the Serbian Pedagogical Society for Informatics. Its founders are professors who 20 years ago had conceived the “Informatics for All” strategy having managed to overcome the years when informatics as an optional course had been on the brink of total end. What does this informatics phenomenon and its boom mean we talked with the representatives of IT Clusters in Novi Sad and Nis, with lecturers and deans, the web-entrepreneurs and other persons working in this thriving industry.
